Letter from Dewey as Governor of New York thanking a supporter for her letter, and saying that her "doch-an-dorris" proves to be a great article documenting the year in racing
Typed letter signed:
"Thomas E. Dewey"
, in black ink, 7¼x10½. January 8, 1945. Executive Chamber, Albany, New York.
In full:
"Dear Herbert: Many thanks for your letter of December 28th containing your "doch-an-dorris" which looks like a momentous document which I am sure records a great year in racing - I hope not the last one of the immediate future. With warm personal regards, Sincerely yours"
. From 1931 to 1933,
Thomas E. Dewey
(
1902-1971
) served as Chief Assistant to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and then as U.S. Attorney. Although Dewey was a Republican, New York's Democratic Governor, Herbert H. Lehman, appointed him Special Prosecutor to root out racketeering in 1935. In 1937, he was elected District Attorney of New York County.
Dewey's successful prosecution of the criminal syndicate Murder, Inc. brought him national fame.
In 1938, Dewey ran for Governor against Lehman but lost. In 1942, Dewey was elected
Governor of New York, serving from 1943-1954
.
Running for President against Franklin Roosevelt in 1944
, Dewey received a larger share of the popular vote (45.9%) and more Electoral Votes (99) than any of FDR's Republican opponents in the three previous races.
Predicted by all the pollsters to win the 1948 presidential election
, however, Dewey lost to President Truman. An exemplar of the once vigorous liberal Northeastern wing of the Republican Party, Dewey helped Dwight Eisenhower secure the 1952 nomination over conservative Ohio Senator Robert A. Taft. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Slightly soiled with small stains across. Ink stamp on upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.

Shipping
