All four signers were politicians involved in New York politics at the city, state or federal level on Sept. 11, 2001,
when four commercial airliners were hijacked by 19 terrorists recruited and trained by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.
Giuliani was in the final year of his second and last term as Mayor of New York, Clinton had just begun her eighth month as U. S. Junior Senator from New York, Pataki was deep into his second term as New York governor and Schumer was working on his second year as U. S. Senior Senator from New York.
While one captured aircraft hit the Pentagon and another, diverted by heroic passengers, crashed in a Pennsylvania field,
two Boeing 747's that had taken off from Boston hit the "Twin Towers" of New York's World Trade Center (WTC). Approximately 3,000 persons - the exact number will never be known - died at and around the WTC, about 600 more than had died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
These included over 400 emergency responders. The enormous global consequences of the 9/11 attacks are well known. Everyone in this photo, including Giuliani, Clinton, Pataki and Schumer, is either wearing mask or has one handy around their necks to help them breathe in the huge clouds of debris kicked up during the collapse of the Twin Towers.
This airborne debris has been blamed as the cause of respiratory problems amongst rescue and recovery workers at the site of the disaster. GIULIANI,
born Rudolph William Louis "Rudy" Giuliani in Brooklyn, New York in 1944, was
Mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001.
A
U. S. attorney who prosecuted cases against organized crime and Wall Street moguls,
he defeated David Dinkins in 1993 to become "hizzoner" in 1993 and soundly defeated Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger in his 1997 re-election campaign. Rudy Giuliani focused on
law enforcement and quality-of-life issues
during two mayoral terms fraught with racial tension and allegations of police miscondcut, the most serious of where were
the police torture of Abner Louima and killings of Amadou Diallo and Patrick Dorismond.
However, he
became a national hero for his leadership of the city during and after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center
, which earned him the title of "
Person of the Year" for 2001 by
Time
Magazine.
After a short stint in the private sector as a consultant and lawyer, Giuliani
tried to use this popularity to win the 2008 Republican presidential nomination,
but he was lost in the crowd of potential candidates and eventually lost the nomination to Arizona Senator John McCain.
CLINTON,
born Hillary Rodham in Chicago, Illinois in 1947 and a graduate of Wellesley College and Yale Law School, married William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton in 1975. Their daughter Chelsea was born in 1980. While actively practicing law herself, she spent 12 years as
First Lady of Arkansas (1978-1980, 1982-1992)
. Since 1982, she has preferred to be called by her married name.
As First Lady during the Presidency of Bill Clinton (1993-2001): she set several firsts, including: first with a postgraduate degree, first to have practiced law, and, in 2007, the first to be elected to public office on her own. She was elected US Senator from New York in 2000, and re-elected in a landslide in 2006.
As First Lady, Hillary Clinton took an active role in public policy, beginning by
chairing the National Task Force on Health Care Reform.
While the Clinton health care proposals were defeated in Congress, and probably contributed to the Republican take-over of the Congress in 1994, she had more success on other issues, including successful advocacy of the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997. In the Senate, Clinton sits on five committees, including Armed Services, and Environment and Public Works. As a Senator, she has worked hard to prove herself a moderate, able to work effectively across party lines, but many public perceptions of her nationally - not in New York - hardened in the 1990s and have proved difficult to change.
She was a favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, but lost it in a hard-fought primary campaign with Illinois Junior Senator Barack Obama. PATAKI,
born in Peekskill, New York in 1945, was
53rd Governor of New York
(1995-2006).
Pataki cut his teeth on politics as Mayor of Peekskill and as a state senator and assembly man before successfully challenging incumbent Mario Cuomo in 1994.
He was governor of New York during the World Trade Center disaster on Sept. 11, 2001.
The catastrophe was personal for him:
he had moved his New York offices out of the Twin Towers only months before the attacks.
After stepping down as governor in 2006, President George W. Bush named him as a U. S. delegate to the 2007 United Nations General Assembly.
SCHUMER,
born Charles Ellis Schumer Brooklyn, New York in 1950,
represented New York's 9th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 to 1999
before defeating Al D'Amato to become
Senior Senator from New York in 1999,
a position he still holds as of this biography. A professional politician who has reportedly never held a job outisde of politics, he was a state assemblyman from 1974 to 1980. Schumer
voted against the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998 as a congressman and in 1999 as a senator.
